What do you enjoy about your job?
Kim: being invited into a family to help them arrange and then conduct the service of their loved one. Being a part of this is an enormous privilege.
Bianca: being of service to a family during the worst time of their lives. Most people who come into my office have never made funeral arrangements before and have no idea what to do. I assist them with everything from ordering flowers to applying for death certificates. In such an emotional time, people often feel confused or lost and it is my role to alleviate that feeling. I love hearing stories, looking at pictures, and seeing joy in family members as they retell their favourite memories of their loved one.
How long have you been in the funeral industry?
Kim: I have worked in the funeral industry for the past 4 years. I have a varied working history from being a travel agent, to a counsellor through to conference and event management. I believe all the skills I have gained in my previous roles have given me the skills needed to have the empathy, understanding and organisational skills required to look after our families.
Bianca: I have worked in the funeral industry for the past 3 years. My work history includes serving as a Victorian Police Officer for 15 years, hairdressing & customer service roles. Experiences in all of these professions have enabled me to acquire the attributes I believe are necessary to be a good funeral director – empathy, communication, organisation & resilience.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
Kim: Spending time at home with my husband, attending and participating in church life and catching up with friends over coffee or a nice meal out.
Bianca: As a mum of 4 teenagers much of my spare time is taken up with chauffeuring kids to school, work, sport and friends. I particularly love watching them play Aussie Rules & Basketball. I love going to the movies, wondering around the shops and spending time with family & friends.
Are there any special community groups you work with or support?
Kim: I have recently been accepted into the volunteer programme where I visit a resident in one of our local aged care facilities. Our branch also sponsors Pet Therapy Sessions and Piano sing-a-long sessions in our local aged care facilities.
Bianca: For the past three years I have served on the committee of our local Junior Aussie Rules Football Club.
