Celebrate life with a living funeral

Funeral planning

Why some Australians are planning and attending their own funeral

A living funeral is a chance to reflect on and celebrate your life – while you’re still here. At Simplicity, we’re proud to offer this as an option for those who want something a little different.

What is a living funeral?

A living funeral (sometimes called a living wake) is a gathering held before someone passes away. In simple terms, it’s attending your own funeral.

But it doesn’t feel like a traditional service. There’s usually less formality, and more focus on connection – sharing stories, music, food, and moments that capture your life. It’s a chance to bring people together, reminisce, and create positive memories while you’re still here.

A different kind of farewell

People come to the idea of a living funeral in different ways.

For some, it’s about being present when their life is reflected on. For others, it’s about easing the emotional weight on loved ones, or marking the end of a long illness.

It’s a rare opportunity to connect with family and friends – to share stories and leave nothing unsaid.

Like any funeral, it’s personal.

How a living funeral works

Planning a living funeral is similar to arranging a traditional service. It just happens at a different time.

At Simplicity, we’ll work with you, your family – and, where needed, your medical team – to shape something that feels right. Whether it’s a small, informal gathering or something more structured, we’ll help you bring it together in a way that reflects you.

We can help organise the key elements, from choosing a location and inviting guests, through to music, readings, and personal touches that tell your story. There’s also the option to include catering, livestreaming, or cultural and religious customs, depending on what’s important to you.

On the day, the difference is simple – you’re there. You can greet your guests, hear their stories, share your own, and be part of the moments that matter.

Some people also choose to plan ahead for what comes later, such as cremation, burial, or memorialisation. This can be arranged separately, or included as part of a prepaid plan, giving clarity and peace of mind for those around you.

Is a living funeral right for you?

For some, a living funeral can feel like the right way to approach things. It may offer a sense of involvement, a way to ease future decisions for family, or an opportunity to mark a significant moment with the people who’ve been part of your life.

If you’re considering it – or simply exploring what’s possible – we’re here to talk it through with you, in your own time.
